Homeless animals in Cuyahoga County are breaking out their rainbow gear and training hard in preparation for the Stray Games adoption event! As athletes from around the world visit Cleveland for the Gay Games 9, the Cleveland APL, City of Cleveland Kennel, and Cuyahoga County Animal Shelter are teaming up to help the homeless animals in our care win their gold medals – loving homes!
The Stray Games Event will be held in conjunction with the opening weekend of the Gay Games at each of the three host shelters on Friday, August 8 through Sunday, August 10. Adoption fees for dogs will be reduced to $50 (including the license fee) and cat adoption fees at the Cleveland APL will be reduced to $5 for adult cats and $10 for kittens.
“As we welcome talented athletes to our wonderful city for this exciting event, we hope the spirit of unity and acceptance that will be inspired by the GG9 will also open people’s minds and hearts to helping a homeless animal celebrate their ultimate victory – a new home,” shared Cleveland APL President & CEO Sharon Harvey, Cleveland Chief Animal Control Officer Ed Jamison, and Cuyahoga County Animal Shelter Kennel Manager Mindy Naticchioni.

Cleveland APL: Located in the Tremont area of Cleveland, the Cleveland Animal Protective League is a private, nonprofit organization and relies solely on donations and program fees to investigate and prosecute animal cruelty in Cuyahoga County and assist more than 14,000 homeless animals a year through a variety of progressive programs. Animals adopted from the APL have been spayed or neutered, tested for heartworm or FeLV/FIV, have received age-appropriate vaccinations and treatment of worms and fleas, and come with helpful species-specific animal care information, a free initial veterinary exam, and are eligible for 30-45 days of free ShelterCare pet health insurance. Cats and kittens come with a travel box, and dogs and puppies go home with a free collar and a leash. City of Cleveland Kennel (Cleveland Division of Animal Control Services): City of Cleveland Kennel (Cleveland Division of Animal Control Services): Located in the Tremont / Steelyard Commons area, Cleveland Animal Control is a local government agency that is funded through the city general fund. We are an open admission shelter that handles all stray dogs found running at large within the City of Cleveland. Cleveland Animal Control impounds an average of 4,300 dogs a year. All dogs adopted from the City of Cleveland are required to be altered (spayed/neutered) before release from the shelter. Adoptions include the spay/neuter, micro-chip, rabies vaccination, routine vaccinations, and a county dog license.
Cuyahoga County Animal Shelter: Cuyahoga County Animal Shelter (CCAS) is a temporary home for dogs that are lost or stray, better known as the “dog pound”. CCAS is a government shelter governed by the Ohio Revised Code, Section 955, and exists solely to serve the lost and stray dogs of Cuyahoga County. CCAS is funded through the sale of dog licenses in the county which are intended to help return lost and stray dogs to their owners. We are an open admissions shelter and cannot turn anyway any lost dog found in our County regardless of temperament, behavior, age, health or breed. We may intake anywhere from 30 to 80 dogs weekly, depending on the season. All dogs adopted from CCAS are either spayed/neutered, receive a 2014 dog license, Rabies vaccination, heartworm test and routine vaccinations.
